Meteorology and Climate are fundamental controls on the livelihoods of the populations of Africa, and are expected to become even more critical in the coming years. Right now, there is a shortage of trained specialists in the science of Meteorology and Climate, and the application of this science to socio-economic systems. The academic collaboration for the introduction of Meteorology and Climate Science degree programmes at the Department of Physics, KNUST is being funded by the UK Department for Education and Skills (DfES), through the British Council, under the England-Africa Partnership (EAP) for Higher Educational Institutions. The EAP is an opportunity for Higher Educational Institutions to develop new and innovative approaches to building capacity in African higher education. The title of this partnership project is: “Degree programmes in Meteorology and Climate Science: A partnership for building capacity for meteorological application and climate change adaptation in West Africa,”. The project has been given the local name “Ewiem Nimdie” (in the Ashanti language) meaning Scientific knowledge of the Atmosphere. The project aims to address the shortage of trained specialists in meteorology and climate science in Ghana and West Africa in general through the provision of taught programmes and practical field work at the Department of Physics, KNUST, Kumasi.
